I began working at UNCW's Writing Center as a peer tutor in August of 2018. My responsibilities as a tutor includes assisting other high school, undergraduate, and graduate students in one-on-one appointments with brainstorming, creating outlines, finding sources, and/or revising their papers. While I never do the work from them, I act as a guide and a reference to help the student improve in their writing techniques and abilities.
I also read online submissions leaving comments, questions, and suggestions for students who submitted their paper electronically, and I answer questions that they asked in the submission. Additionally, I lead group appointments for students who have group papers, and my primary role is to act as a moderate while the students edit each other's work. Lastly, I work in the Writing Lab which is a drop-in to answer questions students have about papers.
I received training in my first semester including shadowing appointments, leading appointments, attending weekly meetings, reading articles about tutors in institutions, and having discussions about the articles. After my first semester, I became a Level I Certified Tutor.
During my second semester, I received more training with more in-depth articles and discussions about tutoring. In addition, I worked in the Writing Lab, and after my second semester, I became a Level II Certified Tutor.
I am currently training to become a Level III Certified Tutor which is the highest level one can achieve at UNCW's Writing Center. I am reading longer articles and will be conducting research to further investigate an area of peer tutoring within an institution.
Because of my accomplishments at the Writing Center, I will be receiving a cord for graduation.
